DIY waxed denim

DIY waxed denim DIY waxed denim
Ever since THOSE waxed skinnies sold out Soph and I have been searching for the perfect alternative. That was until we had a “why don’t we just do it ourselves?!” moment.

How to: DIY Waxed Denim

You will need:
Heavy Duty Fabric Wax – otherwise known as Otter Wax ($10 bucks!)
Hair dryer
Jeans

1. Lay your denim on a flat work surface. Starting from the bottom of your jeans, rub the wax in even strokes covering the entire surface.

2. Use your hairdryer to soften wax and smooth out with your fingers to create an even surface and create a waterproofing seal.

3. Hang your jeans in a cool-dry place for 24 hours to let the wax set.

Done and done!

  1. I wasted $12 on Otter Wax and this did nothing for my jeans, not even a glimmer of shine. For reference I used a grey pair of skinny denim jeans from Forever 21. You will notice in The Coveted's video she uses an ALREADY waxed pair of jeans that faded in the wash to re-wax them. This does not work on plain jeans, the results are disappointing at best and you can't wash waxed jeans. Hopefully this saves someone time and expenses.

    1. I just did this with an old pair of jeans that are now my Fall/Winter Cyclocross/Biking jeans and an old IKEA candle. No shine, but a decent amount of water resistance.
Rub it on, cover with a baking sheet and iron on medium to get it ‘into’ the threads.

If you want shiny, this won’t work. If you want waterproof, this may be a cheaper alternative.

  2. Hi Geri,

I tried this DIY on my old black jeans and it ended up looks life faded jeans and very waxy instead of shiny and glossy and feels hard like when I bought a new waxed denim. I was wondering if yours feel that way too. or maybe any tips on doing it.

  3. Hello, could you please tell me, have you allready washed them? If yes, have you washed them by hand or in a washing maschine?
And was everything OK? Did the waxed effect change somehow?

Thank you very much for your answer.

  5. It looks really awesome!

Could you please tell me, have you already washed them? If yes, was it by hands or in a washing-mashine? And did the waxed effect change samehow or everything was OK?

Thank you very much for your answer.

  6. spent $25 on wax (had to fly it fro the us – can’t be bought in australia) and waste of time. what a load of crap.. repeated it 2x and still nil results. this was on a pair of old waxed jeans.

  7. I tried these tips and my denim ended up looking dirty. I even washed and lint rolled my denim before I began waxing. What did I do wrong? Did I not use enough wax or did I not use enough heat to melt the wax? About how long did you spend heating the wax with the blow dryer?
