Let’s be honest, traveling can be exhausting. Between the schlepping, the decrease in atmospheric pressure,  the decrease in available oxygen and the lack of humidity, spending time in-flight can really take it’s tole. So what to do if you want to avoid arriving bloated with a dry nose, dry scratchy bloodshot eyes and dry itchy skin? Here are my six tips that will keep you looking and feeling good from the inside out:

hydrated
1. Drink up:
The human brain is composed of 95% water; blood is 82% water and the lungs are nearly 90% water. Water is the single most critical nutrient and when traveling on a plane you can become extremely dehydrated due to the low humidity levels and atmospheric pressure. To avoid dehydration, avoid dehydrating beverages like tomato juice, v8, soft drinks, alcohol and anything caffeinated. Instead, pick up big bottles of coconut water, which are packed with electrolytes, while at the airport and drink eight ounces of water (no ice) per hour to maintain your electrolyte balance. Prior to landing, have a cup of hot water with lemon. This will help stimulate digestion and detox your body.

hydrating foods
2. Choose your food wisely:
Food is equally as important to hydration. Avoid those delicious salty nuts and snacks. Instead, carry on a big leafy salad, fruits and veggies with high water content (apples, melons, cucumber, celery, etc.) and whole grains.

3. Tend to your skin:
Wear as little makeup as possible and pack these four things with you: a clean towel, a face mist, moisturizer and a face mask such as Avon’s Clinical Overnight Hydration Mask.  Apply the mask just after you board and leave it on for the duration of the flight. The unique gel formula deeply replenishes lost moisture and replumps the look of skin.  Before landing, wash your face and use your clean towel to dry your skin. Spritz your face mist and moisturize. I promise, you will look incredibly fresh!

4. Stay comfortable:
Airline pillows and blankets are covered in bacteria but it’s important to stay warm so that you can rest inflight. I like to travel with a scarf around my neck to use as a pillow and a cashmere travel blanket. You won’t miss a wink of sleep if you are warm and cozy.

5. Keep it moving:
When awake, don’t stay seated for more than an hour and when seated, stretch and move around.  It’s important to keep the blood flowing to avoid stiffness, blood clots and fatigue.

6. The final tszuj:
Now that you’ve boarded with no makeup on, consumed lots of water, made healthy food choices, applied your Avon face mask, slept well and moved your body periodically, you should be in pretty good shape to land. The one last thing to do is tszuj. Brush your teeth, apply your makeup, change into fresh and clean clothes and moisturize your hands.

By the time you walk off that plane, you’re going to look and feel rested, hydrated and well put together.

Bon voyage!
