How to Realistically Cut Back on Technology

How to Realistically Cut Back on Technology
We’ve talked a lot about detoxing from devices and really do believe it’s crucial to recharging your mind, but also know it’s not always realistic to fully cut out technology. I still struggle to give up tech, even when I know I need to, mainly because our culture relies on it for endless daily functions.

So with that in mind, I wanted to share ways to instead cut back on devices—since they are ingrained in our society and at times necessary—but in a way that you still benefit from using them less.

Here are 5 ways to do so:

Go to the mall
Online shopping is one of the greatest inventions ever, but it’s just another excuse to sit behind a screen. Try heading into a physical store next time you need something, and don’t bring your phone. You’ll even get to have face-to-face convos with humans!

Pick up a real book
Set the iPad or Kindle down for your next read, and instead pick up a real book. It’s such a nice treat and a simple break from tech.

One at a time
Multi-tasking devices is a major stressor, we know this. Try not to be on Snapchat while watching TV, or scrolling through Pinterest while talking on the phone. One at a time is still cutting back when you’re used to using multiple devices at once.

Use a pen and paper
It’s become an autopilot habit to pick up your computer or phone for writing out grocery lists, to-do lists, or even work notes. Next time, grab a notebook and a pen instead. Give yourself a few less minutes on a device each time you want to write something down. Or spend time doodling or coloring vs. opening a game on your phone to pass the time.

Limit app time
We’ve all been there. You’re scrolling through Instagram, see an account that intrigues you, then 45 minutes later you find yourself seriously deep in the stalking game on a random girl’s account who lives in London. The Insta black hole is real! Instead, give yourself 5 minutes (set an alarm if you have to) to scroll aimlessly, then put the phone away.

How do you cut back on tech when it’s something we rely on so strongly? Please share!

  1. I love reading books and it helps me using technology less, however, since I always read non-fiction, I have to sometimes go back to my laptop to do some side research. I guess it’s nice to cut back but ultimately using technology the right way and appreciating them are the most important <3

  4. Totally agree with all of these. I’ve especially become a big advocate for reading real books and using pen and paper. I find that I actually remember things better if I actually write them down rather than type them into a notes app. Plus it gives me an excuse to collect pretty notebooks and pens 😉

    Great post!

  5. I think this post shows how ingrained ‘tech’ has become in daily life that we ‘think’ it is a necessity, when in fact, it is not. Anyone could put down their phone tomorrow and life would still go on. I daresay, I think the world and society might be a better place if everyone did. Still, kudos to you for suggesting ‘alternatives’ – i.e. ‘real’ books and pen and paper – that have existed for millennia before the smart phone.

  6. These are great ways. Put your phone down when your around people especially in your house. We must become intentional to reallyvwant to stop this addiction. Reading about it helps me jeep it in the forefront of my mind.

  7. Great Tips! The world is making everybody think and act the same with no creativity! I deleted all of my social media and honestly feel so happy and less stressed. I would DEFINETELY recommend it to anybody it was the best decision that I have ever made.
