5 of the Best Clean Sunscreens

Summa, summa, summa time—it’s here! Today marks the first official day of summer, which makes me incredibly happy. Time for easy days, pool and beach breaks, cute dresses, and lots of sunblock, obviously. If you want to stay protected (as you should) but aren’t into the loads of toxins in most mainstream sunscreens, we’ve got you. Here are 5 clean sunscreens that are healthy for you and the environment:

Honest Mineral Sunscreen
SPF 50 that is safe for the whole family and free of parabens, fragrances and chemical sunscreens like oxybenzone and octinoxate. This mineral sunscreen is water resistant up 80 minutes, so you can swim and protect simultaneously.

All Good Sunscreen Butter
This sunscreen, or butter (how lux?!,) option is made with organic ingredients, is water resistant for up to 80 minutes, and as a plus, is gluten free. It offers SPF 50 protection which is the lowest number I’ll go personally.

Babo Sheer Zinc Continuous Spray Sunscreen
This sunscreen will spray on sheer, so no worries about streaks. This option is free of parabens, dyes and sulfates so you also don’t have to worry about negative side effects on sensitive skin. I really, really this kind.

Green Goo Solar Goo Sun Protection Stick
If you prefer a stick to a cream or a runny spray, you’ll love Green Goo. This is a wonderful option for faces because it’s infused with coconut oil and made with only seven organic ingredients, so no breakouts. Yay!

Kabana Green Screen Organic Sunscreen
This sunscreen is available in a few different SPFs and only has nine ingredients on the label, but the most important thing about this brand is that they are the only one on the shelves that shares OTC SPF testing data. Aka they list the actual size of zinc oxide particles. Amazing, right?

  1. COOLA! I used them on my most recent trip and LOVE the face sunscreen and spray. It’s a bit pricey but it’s worth it for organic and clean ingredients (I go by the Think Dirty app). I bought it on Amazon, so it’s easy to get a hold of. Happy summer!

  2. If you’re in a pinch and just need to hit up a drugstore for sunscreen, Aveeno Baby SPF 50 is great too. It’s a mineral sunscreen and the updated formulation scored a 1 according to EWG criteria.

  3. I’m trying out this sunscreen from Stream 2 Sea which is described as reef-safe. I tend to go for physical blockers, and I just learned that many ingredients from chemical-based sunscreens damage coral reefs (they cause coral bleaching). From what I learned, the following ingredients damage coral: oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate and 4-methylbenzylidine camphor. Stream 2 Sea was one of the brands listed as reef safe based on my online search. I just ordered it so I have yet to try it – but as it does rely on physical blockers rather than chemical blockers it may take some rubbing in for it to absorb. The brand is available on Amazon.

  4. very late to the party, but just want to point out that most mainstream sunscreens are NOT filled with toxins. sunscreen is so important that people should use whatever works for them, and the scare tactics over “unnatural” sunscreens are definitely working against that.

  5. Came across this when looking for new sunscreen recommendations. Why would you include Honest Sunscreen after their debacle of people getting sunburned despite correct application? I would never trust them again after my red headed fair skinned daughter got burned after using it. At just one year old that was the only sunburn she has ever had and she’s now four. 🙁
