6 Foods That Make You Live Longer

Foods That Make You Live Longer
For me, it’s all about balance when it comes to eating healthier. I have my good days, and well, my not so good days, but hey, we all deserve to splurge a little! Regardless of what types of cravings I give in to (I have a MAJOR sweet tooth…OK and a carb tooth), it’s important for me to try and balance things out with foods that will help keep me healthy for years to come. I want to live and feel good for as long as possible, after all. Who doesn’t?! Here are 6 superfoods I always try to incorporate that can actually make you live longer:

Salmon

Salmon is chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids, which can slow down the aging process in our bodies. These powerhouse fatty acids are known to help prevent heart disease and possibly even Alzheimer’s! Just be sure to look for wild salmon, since farmed salmon can actually do more damage than good.

Nuts

Any type of nut makes the perfect snack. Not only are they full of fiber, protein, and heart-healthy fats—they can also help you live longer by preventing certain diseases including cancer and heart disease.

Avocados

Avocados are more than just a trendy toast topper and guacamole ingredient – they’re packed with monounsaturated fats that can help reduce heart disease and help you live longer. Bonus: the healthy fats in avocados always keep you full foreva.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes can help fight inflammation, which is a huge contributor to the aging process. This is thanks to the presence of lycopene, which is anti-inflammatory and has even been linked to lowering LDL, or bad cholesterol.

Blueberries

These small berries pack a super big punch—mainly due to their high polyphenol levels. Polyphenols are a type of antioxidant that fight free radicals in our bodies and help keep us young. Try adding blueberries to your smoothies, or eat them with some almonds as a mid-afternoon snack to fight inflammation and possibly even reduce your risk of cancer and diabetes.

Dark chocolate

Although not every type of chocolate is healthy for you, dark chocolate (75% or more cacao) is full of antioxidants that can help you live longer. It’s also a powerful anti-inflammatory food, so don’t feel too guilty next time you have a craving.

Do you have any other favorite superfoods? How do you incorporate them into your diet?

  1. I think you forgot to mention eggs! I love eggs and eat them almost every day for breakfast since we raise chickens in our backyard.

  2. My friend just had a heart attack and her doctor told her not tomatoes and not cashews. I always thought those were both heart healthy. She is going to talk to the nutritionist and try to get more info but we were both surprised.
