Weekly Wellness Challenge: Toxin Elimination, Bathroom Edition

clean beauty products
Toxins (boooo!). They’re everywhere! And though it can be overwhelming, we can limit the amount we allow in our homes and on our bodies as much as possible.

Trusted products like soap, toothpaste, lotion, etc. are often packed with chemicals that nobody in their right mind would ever rub over their skin if they weren’t marketed in pretty packaging. For this week’s challenge, it’s time to open up those beauty cabinets, take inventory of what we’re using, and dive deep into the world of clean products.

Challenge: Toxin Elimination, Bathroom Edition

I challenge you to swap out any toxic-filled products that you use daily for cleaner versions. When you’re cleaning out your products, here are some chemicals to watch out for: BHA and BHT (mainly in moisturizers and the like), DEA-related ingredients, p-phenylenediamine and anything with CI followed by a five-digit number, parabens, dibutyl phthalate, parfum (fragrance), DMDM hydantoin, methenamine, anything listed with “eth” like polyethylene glycol, petrolatum, -siloxane or -methicone, and triclosan. Phew, a lot, right?!

It can be a lot to think about (and I know restocking isn’t cheap), which is why we’re starting with one small room in your home. Take an hour this week to go through all of your products in the medicine cabinet and shower. If you live with a loved one, go through their stuff too!

Then, the fun part…shopping! Lucky for you, I’ve done LOTS of testing, and most of this stuff is available online. Here are some of my favorite swaps for clean beauty products:

1. OSEA Red Algae Mask
2. Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum
3. OSEA Ocean Cleansing Mudd
4. Sweet Sisters Coconut + Baking Soda Healthy Deodorant Stick
5. Aesop Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Serum
6. 100% Pure Moisturizer
7. Dr Bronners Organic Eucalyptus Magic Soap
8. Cocofloss
9. goop by Juice Beauty
10.Natural Bamboo Toothbrush
11. Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste
12. LOLI
13. Not pictured: organic tampons.

What other clean products should I be using?? Let me know how this challenge goes for you!

Happy clean cleaning!

  1. I just purchased liquid Castille soap for my bathroom for hand wash.Use to use it on the horses and leather when I was a child.

  3. Geri, this post is near and dear to me… I recently went through a HUGE overhaul myself. Id also recommend: Butter nail polish, O&M hair products, Shea Moisture styling products (their coconut lines are great for summer) and 100%pure honey & virgin coconut shampoo/conditioner and their Vitamin C serum for face. Ill keep it beauty related but I’ve found some great clean- cleaning swaps too!

  4. I swear by Aesop products. Clean, stylish and incredibly effective. The Parsley Seed range has been amazing for my skin.
I use their hand soap in the kitchen. Looks great and smells amazing!
Thank you for all the research. So hard sometimes to know where to begin. My next challenge is to find an effective deodorant. I’ll have to try the one you suggested as so far finding that the biggest challenge of all the clean products.

  5. Dear Geri,

Your blog is like a little slice of heaven that I savor each day. Thank you for being so genuine and unique in a world where bloggers have absolutely no integrity or real point of view.

    Bisous,

    Rebecca

  6. It’s been only recently that I started paying attention to what my beauty products contain. At first I was shocked that producers put so many toxic ingredients into cosmetics. The worst part is that even expensive products often contain cheap chemical preservatives.

  7. Great product suggestions! It was hard but I switched to all natural products last year after being diagnosed with chronic migraines and endocrine issues, and it’s made me feel SO much better. The app Think Dirty is amazingly helpful too (not affiliated in any way, just a fan!). You can scan a product’s barcode and the app will list its level of toxicity and explain why citing clinical literature. Really helpful!

  8. Just stumbled upon your blog and I’m loving it! And definitely agree with Alexis! The Think Dirty app is a great tool for making a switch to non-toxic beauty, I use it everyday 🙂

  9. This is a great list of clean products, a few of which we use everyday too. Thanks for sharing!

My friend and I got tired of trying to find products that were free of harmful ingredients so we started our own skin care line, Live Naked Skin Care! That way we knew exactly what we were putting on our skin. We offer scrubs and moisturizers and plan to grow to a few more skin care essentials.
