5 Reasons You Should Make Your Own Lip Balms

If there’s one thing I always carry in my purse, it’s a good lip balm. Especially when the weather cools down and the air is crisp, proper skin (and lip) hydration is so important. That being said, lip balm is another easy-to-make beauty DIY that I highly recommend. Here are 5 reasons why:

1. It’s Inexpensive!
Let’s be real, buying high-quality beauty products can get really expensive. Once you start to make these things yourself (with basically the same ingredients) you realize how much money you can actually save. Why? Because you can buy one jar of coconut oil, for example, and get more than 20 batches of skin and hair product from it… for the same price as one store-bought all-natural lip balm! #winning

2. Non-Toxic
This is a biggie. It feels so good to know what I’m putting in and on my body on a daily basis, no mystery ingredients here. Especially when we’re talking about our lips – which are extremely sensitive – if I can’t find it in my kitchen cabinets, it’s not going on my lips.

3. They’re Totally Customizable
There are so many different essential oils out there that can be used in a homemade lip balm recipe. It just depends what mood you’re in, or if they’re a gift, your friends favorite scent. Some of my personal faves? Rose, lavender, grapefruit, peppermint, cinnamon and eucalyptus.

4. They Double As Great Gifts
I already told you how inexpensive and customizable these little gems are, so it’s only appropriate to make a few batches as gifts. (The holidays are around the corner after all…!) You can find cute mini jars and decorate them accordingly, your friends will love you.

5. They Double As Impromptu Moisturizers
I’ve always been a big fan of Rosebud Salve because it doubles as a one-fix moisturizer for problematic dry areas, but at $8 a pop, why not DIY? All of the ingredients in these homemade lips balms also work to help hydrate dry skin. So if you’re in a pinch and have an irritating dry patch on your chin or elbow, voila, multi-functional!
