My grandmother loved to joke about how silly (read: stupid!) it was that her and her girlfriends would lay out in the sun for hours with reflectors in hand, bodies doused in baby oil. Reflecting on some of the stuff we use on our bodies, I’m pretty certain we’re going to tell similar stories about using toxic beauty products. Eek!
I encourage you to stop for a minute and take inventory of the ingredients in the beauty products in your beauty cabinet. Do your products have ingredients such as petrolatum, phenoxyethanol, polyacrylamide, parabans, dioxane, benzophenone, coal tar, ethanolamine compounds, homosalate, and more from this list? If the answer is yes, those are all really, really bad, and you may want to spend time researching then cleansing your cabinet.
We live in a world where beauty isn’t heavily regulated which leaves us, the trusted consumers, with faces, bodies, and nails lined with harsh chemicals. Myself included. And the sad part is, even though we know these products—especially some of our most favorite luxury goods—are bad, many of us (again, myself included) continue using them because we want to look beautiful, and the clean lines aren’t quite there yet. The good news is that this is changing, FAST!
One of my personal goals is to work towards a toxic-free makeup bag and beauty cabinet. I’m pretty far from the goal, but am chipping away little by little by constantly researching and trying new clean lines/products. I’ll be sharing my best findings right here with you (and of course, I share a lot of my trials on Snapchat –> gerihirsch).
Here are the two cleaner lipstick lines that I’ve fully adopted: 1. 100% Pure
“Completely free of all harmful toxins, 100% PURE® is a healthy and pure line of nourishing personal care items made only with the highest quality ingredients. 100% natural and 100% cruelty-free, all products are completely, 100% free of artificial colors, artificial fragrances, synthetic chemical preservatives and all other toxins. Beauty, as pure as it is powerful. Truly, health food for your skin.”
Made in France, these lipsticks are made with pomegranate oil and shea butter, and are colored from fruit pigments leaving them super moisturizing. My favorite color is the rich nude which they call FOXGLOVE.
2. Kosas
“Kosås lip colors are made by hand, blending science and art to produce super natural performance color, with smooth finishes, even textures, and balanced hues. Kosås is made with love in Los Angeles, CA by founder, mother, and cosmetic connoisseur, Sheena Yaitanes.”
The line is free of parabens, phthalates, and sulfates, and is made of key ingredients such as green tea, rosehip, and grape seed oil. My favorite color for summer is Rosewater.
Happy (clean) smooching, everyone!

Thanks for the recommendations, I’m always looking for more natural makeup and skincare! I think it’s funny how often we think only of what we put IN our bodies, never giving mind to what we put ON them. Great post. XO -Kim

I got a Kosas Lipstick a few months ago at the Echo Park Craft Fair and I love it soooooo much. I get compliments on it all the time– don’t hate that! I got Fringe which is kiiind of a brick red?? Love it.
I have never heard about any of those brands but they seem really cool, and I really like the idea of clean beauty products! Thanks a lot for sharing that with us!
