How To Detox Your Cleaning Products

There are three big areas that I like to focus on when it comes to eliminating toxins from my life: what I put in, on and around my body.

For today’s challenge, we’re going to focus on what we’re putting around our bodies every time we clean our homes.

Challenge: Detox Your Cleaning Products

Round-up everything you normally use to clean your home and assess the ingredients. Some of the harmful common chemicals that live in cleaning supplies are: phthalates, triclosan, ammonia, chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and PERC.

Get rid of anything with harsh chemicals and replace them with safer options. Some of my favorites:

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser  – The OGs of natural cleaning supplies, a version of this formula has been around since the 1880s! There are 5 simple ingredients (limestone, feldspar, biodegradable cleaning agents, soda ash, and baking soda) combined to create a gentle yet crazy effective product. The perfect solution for messy—and we’re talking even the messiest—surfaces.

UBERPAKK charcoal air fresheners – Getting rid of odors safely was always a major problem for us; that is until we met this California-made product. These cute little bags of charcoal purify air and eliminate odors, allergens and pollutants from the air. Place them anywhere stinky—shoes, a gym bag, your car—and let them work their magic.

Murchison Hume Glass Cleaner (use code addicted20 for 20% off) – Ammonia and dye-free, this alternative to chemically-infused blue glass cleaner can be used on mirrors, windows, cell phones, whatever you want. It’s 100% cruelty-free, safe for pets and kids, and recyclable. Murchison prides themselves on making clean products that are pretty enough to be displayed, and I’m happy to show this bad boy off.

Murchison Hume Multi-surface Cleaner (use code addicted20 for 20% off) – Another magical Murchison potion, this product can be used to spruce up literally any surface in your home. It’ll kill germs and anything else lingering, but in a natural way that doesn’t affect human well-being or the air. This product is created in the US, but Murchison makes the most beautiful cleaning bottles in the world. Plus, it smells incredible!

Puracy Hand Soap – Say hello to clean hands in the cleanest way! No harsh chemicals to strip natural oils off your skin, all while removing dirt and germs. Puracy makes pure products that are safe for all the living beings in your home, and they even have a team of Ph. D. chemists who develop their creations—no big deal. What is a big deal, though, is this hand soap. The best!

Puracy Dish Soap – Such a gentle way to get your dishes sparkling! This product was developed by doctors with safe cleaning in mind, and it’s rated the #1 dish soap by customers on Amazon. It’s plant-powered, hypoallergenic, non-toxic, gluten-free, vegan, and biodegradable a.k.a. everything we’ve ever wanted in a cleaning product. 100% Mother Nature approved.

Wool dryer balls – Dryer sheets smell great and all, but they are usually filled with chemicals and harmful perfumes. No thanks! Using wool dryer balls as an alternative is not only better for your system, but they decrease drying time, too. Just toss them into your dryer and they’ll do their thing. Incredibly easy? Check! Better for your health? Check! Safe for the environment? Check! I’m e so in.

  1. Those dryer balls are so good! I also like that they last a really long time, too. I make my own cleaning products using essential oils and they work perfectly! I make a multi-purpose cleaner with 1 part white vinegar, 2.5 parts distilled water, and about 20 drops of lemon essential oil.

  2. Dr. Bronner’s pure Castile soap! I just discovered it this year and it’s been a game changer for cleaning surfaces and floors.

  3. I just started using the dryer balls last month and I love them! I add a few drops of essential oil to each ball. They work so well! Lots of them on Etsy.

I also switched to dr bronners liquid soap for hands, dishes and general scrubbing up.

Ecover Dishwasher Tablets work really well (half a tablet is enough) for diahwashers and are ewg approved.

  4. Hi, I just discovered your blog and I like your approach to wellness, simplicity, and awareness. I have used Shaklee products for household cleaning and laundry for years. The core product, Basic H2, is highly concentrated so I only have to buy it once every 9-10 months. Diluted, it cleans like Windex. At a higher concentration it cleans like Fantastik. Straight, you can use it to clean grease spots from your garage floor. There’s a creamy scrub that compares to Ajax, but the smell is heavenly (ground cherry pits, can you believe?). Responsible, recyclable, always green. The laundry detergent, too, is fragrance free, available for HE machines, and also concentrated so you don’t use as much. Delivered to my door, so my grocery bags are that much lighter when I do go out.

  5. I was just walking upstairs from putting my laundry in the dryer with my wool dryer balls with essential oils. I was thinking to myself these are my new obsession. Wool dryer balls are absolutely amazing!
