LIVE WELL: Cold Plunge

Have you guys heard of cold plunges? I was a little unfamiliar with the topic, but after digging in a bit and trying it, I’m hooked.

So what is it exactly? Basically, it’s a tub or small pool filled with water—usually between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideally, you’d jump into one for about 10 to 20 seconds after a quick stint in a sauna or after an intense workout. If this sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve heard of the infamous “ice baths” athletes take after practices and games. The cold water helps to reduce muscle inflammation, which brings me to the benefits section of this post…

Benefits

As mentioned athletes and basically everyone in the wellness world swear by the health benefits of cold plunges. Tony Robbins even has a post on his website about it because he strongly believes in the health benefits and does one every morning as part of his workout routine.

What are some of the most well-known benefits?

  • Reduces muscle inflammation
  • Improves cardiovascular circulation
  • Can help treat symptoms of depression
  • Boosts metabolism
  • Can improve lymphatic circulation

It has also been practiced for thousands of years and is considered an integral part of Chinese medicine. Some even say making cold water plunges part of your normal routine can help release your body’s “natural healing powers.”

Since I don’t have a pool or my own sauna (#goals), I’ve been mimicking the practice in my own shower. I’ll shower in regular temperature until it’s time to wash my conditioner off, then I go cold. Like really cold. It takes about 30 seconds and I swear it wakes me up like nothing else – and it’s especially refreshing after a workout. So on top of all the benefits, there’s that. Yes, it’s uncomfortable at first but it’s so quick!

Into it? Totally not?
