But Does It Spark Joy?

If you’re a Marie Kondo fan then you already know about her “does it spark joy?” rule. And if not, may I suggest picking up her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, or watching her Netflix show, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo? I promise it will change your life!

Her “does it spark joy?” philosophy is exactly as it sounds. While cleaning out your home, she suggests holding each item in your hands and asking yourself that exact questions: DOES IT SPARK JOY? If the answer is no, it’s time to get rid of it and if it’s a yes, you keep it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about her philosophy beyond organizing our homes. What if we applied this philosophy to other areas of our lives? What if we stopped to ask ourselves, “but does it spark joy?” with just about everything? Would filtering our lives this way distill down what makes us feel happy and remove the things that don’t in a mindful way?

Some areas where this could apply: relationships, holding grudges, your own thoughts, your job, who you follow on Instagram, what you have for breakfast, how you take your coffee, drinking alcohol, an over-scheduled calendar, a recluse existence, procrastination, credit card debt, a savings account that you never touch, the list goes on and on and could be just about anything in your life.

I challenge you to start thinking about this phrase, “but does it spark joy?” more frequently as a way to deeply connect with what serves you and what doesn’t. I have a feeling you will spark a whole lot more joy! Please keep me posted on your results?

  1. Love this! I definitely need to ask myself this question more often. I am going to watch that show on Netflix asap and see what I can learn from it. I definitely need to de-clutter my life!

  2. I started watching Marie Kondo recently. This is so true actually 🙂 I always love to limit myself only with items I truly need, I truly love, or they truly have a spark of a memory/person 🙂

  3. I watched her Netflix show and was amazed on how she organizes every room, drawer, cabinet and closet. And for the past two months, I have been going from room to room organizing and only keeping things that “spark joy” and saying thank you to the things that don’t.

I have also been applying this to all areas of my life. Everyday I practice to live my life with intention of love, joy and service. It has made my life more fulfilling than I ever imagined.
