3 Clean Non-Toxic Foundations That Actually Work

I haven’t been a foundation girl for a VERY long time. I like skin to look like skin and after heavily investing time, energy and money into my skincare regimen, I didn’t need it. I was able to accomplish the makeup look I wanted by concealing in the right places and warming up my face with a touch of bronzer and a swipe of blush. That was until I got pregnant with my second and hormonal melasma exploded all over my face. My porcelain skin is now kissed with brown spots in a variety of shapes and sizes. In some spots, above my lips, for example, it almost looks like I’m dirty. So, until I can work on fixing the problem (hellllllo clear & brilliant lasers, creams and loads of vitamin c serums), I’ve been using foundation again.

Here are the clean non-toxic foundations that I like best and think are worth trying:

RMS “Un” Cover-Up Cream Foundation, $52 // available in 16 shades
I’m always excited when RMS launches a new product because they don’t release them often; they only release products when they’re REALLY that good. And this “un” cover-up cream foundation” is that! Formulated with their signature organic cold centrifuged coconut oil, it leaves the skin looking dewy and luminous. If you prefer less shine, top it with their “un” powder in translucent – that’s what I do. And just as a heads up, it is packaged in a glass jar and you use the included spatula to scoop out product, which is a little different than most foundations, but you totally get use to it.

Kosas Tinted Face Oil Foundation, $42 // available in 16 shades
If you want to try something completely different and rad, try this tinted face oil! It’s a feather-weight, medium coverage foundation slash hydrating skin elixir. It’s literally a tinted face oil (as the name suggests) that acts as a foundation evening out your skin tone, minimizing pores, and concealing imperfections. I like that the formula gives good coverage but is still breathable and the silky finish leaves your skin looking velvety and hydrated.

Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation, $54 // available in 18 shades
If you want something that feels like a good old regular foundation in terms of the way it’s bottled, applied, etc., Ilia’s true skin serum foundation is an excellent option. It’s a buildable medium coverage that helps blur imperfections and leaves the skin looking beautifully smooth.
