As my grandmother liked to joke, there are two things certain in life: aging and taxes!
I, for one, am all about embracing graceful aging. I find aging to be quite beautiful, seeing life and someone’s journey through their lines. HOWEVER, I’m not interested in aging any faster than I need to, and am a firm believer in preserving youthful skin every natural way that I can. Here are the anti-aging habits I live by:
1. WASH UP
Washing your face nightly is critical. When you sleep with makeup on you’re clogging the pores, and on top of that, pollutants and other bacteria adhere to the makeup and further add stress and damage to the skin. Leaving makeup on overnight can exacerbate breakouts and worsen the skin aging process. So wash, wash, wash!
2. SPF DAILY
This may seem obvious, but I can’t not say it. The sun is the number one culprit of aging, making sunblock a MUST. The earlier you start, the better! I use the Kate Somerville Daily Reflector moisturizer with SPF 50 and love that it covers both in one: moisturizer & SPF.
Again, this may seem obvious, but applying a moisturizer as part of your skincare routine comes with massive benefits. Moisturizing your face will help you to look and feel younger, you will have softer, more elastic skin, and it will keep your skin hydrated.
4. WEAR SUNGLASSES
Fun in the sun is a must, but be sure to protect your eyes (and face with SPF!) with sunglasses that have both UVA and UVB protection to avoid excessive squinting. Squinting and straining can cause crow’s feet and fine lines in the thinner skin surrounding your eyes. No thank you!
5. NIX STRAWS
When you pucker up to sip through straws, do you notice the lines that appear around your mouth? Over time those lines get deeper and deeper and will sit on your face even while you aren’t drinking. Skip the straws all together and drink everything like you drink wine: straight from the glass!
Sleep is the time when your skin rejuvenates which is the key to beautiful skin, BUT the less talked about anti-aging sleep secret is sleeping with your face up. Sleeping on your side or face down can cause permanent wrinkles.
