People often joke about “surviving” their first year of marriage but for us survival was a bit more literal. Ten months after saying “I do!” my husbands heart stopped while on his typical morning jog. He was revived but it was a long road to recovery (which you can read about there) and it’s truly a miracle that he’s alive. Today, on our first wedding anniversary, I am bursting with gratitude – I got to keep my guy!
Coming THAT close to saying goodbye is something no young couple should ever go through however, we did, and now it is part of our story. Instead of rejecting what happened, we’ve embraced it and are stronger because of it. Unbreakable in fact. Being given a second chance at spending our lives together has, in a very romantic way, proven to be a profound gift.
In light of being so sentimental, and in honor of our anniversary, I wanted to share some of our wedding photos for the first time. This post captures getting ready which I was fortunate to do with both of our grandmothers (my Nonnie has since passed), mothers, sisters and nieces (all six of them). We had a ball sipping champagne, sharing stories and getting our hair and makeup done while tending to my bridal jitters. My favorite moment was when my grandmother saw me with my veil on for the first time. It’s a moment I will never forget.
