When I’m deep into my wellness game, one of the things I often overlook is my hair. Which is a big mistake – huge! – because hair is the ultimate accessory, one that you can’t remove (unless you’re Cara Delevigne). So, instead of disregarding my locks as I better my body and soul, I’m starting to integrate my mane into my wellness practice as well. If you want to join me, here are some ideas:
1. Mask while working out
If you’re hitting up a hot yoga or Soul Cycle class, double up your workout with a nourishing hair mask. Your hair will be sweaty already, so might as well multitask when the look of your hair doesn’t really matter. Plus, your body and hair will both feel 100% after! Some favorites include Ouai’s treatment masque, Gloss Moderne’s High Gloss Mask, and Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Hair Pak.
2. Sweat for volume
I don’t know about you, but when my hair is clean, it’s at its worst—I’m more of a day two or three kinda girl. Luckily, I’ve developed a way to get there a littttle faster. It’s simple: If you must wash your hair, try doing so right before you workout (hot yoga excluded – think light sweat workouts). The perspiration will help create volume and will bring texture to your ends, especially if it was in a top knot. And yes, this will require a second shower (sorryyy), but remember, it’s in the name of good hair!
3. Essential oils
I’m really into essential oils for all sorts of uses (more on that here) and as it turns out, there are a handful of benefits that directly benefit your hair. Next time you go to turn on your diffuser, consider rubbing some of these onto your scalp:
- Tea tree oil helps soothe a dry, itchy scalp
- Chamomile oil soothes an inflamed, itchy scalp
- Lemon oil helps with the management of dandruff
- Almond and castor oil help to promote hair growth
4. Supplements and food
I’m pretty conscientious about eating and drinking for my skin, but the truth is, there are lots of supplements and diet choices I could be making for my hair. Three ideas:
- Superfoods: A healthy balanced diet is reflected in your hair so eat up! Reach for foods with a solid mix of good fats, rich proteins, antioxidants and dense vitamin and mineral counts: almonds, salmon, walnuts, lentils, avocados, oats, sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin seeds, berries and leafy greens.
