Bone Broth & Egg Recipe


For this week’s installment of nourishing recipes from my wonderful postpartum doula, she’s sharing a simple replenishing bone broth. So many benefits! Written with love from my doula, Stephanie Matthias, herself:

Bone broth is packed with collagen and gelatin as well as amino acids and minerals that help speed up your body’s healing process – perfect for a mama recovering from birth. All of those things also support your skin, hair, nails and help to reduce cellulite. It’s already pretty high in protein on its own, but the added egg makes it a great high-protein meal.

This recipe can easily be modified and played with. You could add in some herbs and aromatics while you’re warming the broth if you don’t love the taste of bone broth on its own. You can also turn it into a proper soup by adding veggies or meat. The broth and egg on their own is a super easy, quick, nutrient dense snack that’s great to sip on any time of the day (or night if you’re up with baby).

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of using bone broth made with organic, grass-fed bones. The process of making the broth includes cooking the bones for long hours to leach out all of the gelatin, collagen, minerals, and vitamins. The healthier the animal that those bones came from, the higher quality your broth is going to be. In my opinion, it’s worth the extra dollars to buy the really good stuff (or make your own!), especially while you’re in the healing stages.

Likewise, it’s so important to consume eggs that are from pasture raised chickens who are fed only organic, soy-free, non gmo foods. This will produce better quality eggs that are way more nutritious than commercially produced eggs. Ideally, eggs from the farmers market are your go-to during the postpartum time and beyond!

RECIPE: Bone Broth & Egg

Ingredients:

4 cups of organic, grass-fed bone broth (previously frozen is totally fine – I like Bonafide Provisions)
1 organic, pasture raised egg
Pinch of salt

Directions:

1. Bring bone broth to a boil on the stove.
2. Meanwhile, in a large soup bowl, whisk the egg well and add a generous pinch of salt.
3. Once the bone broth has come to a boil, pour it over the egg, whisking the whole time. Continue whisking the mixture until there is a nice layer of foam on top. The boiling broth will be more than hot enough to cook the egg.
