Are you Double Cleansing?

I’ve been hearing the phrase “double cleanse” more and more lately, so I thought I’d weigh in with a LIVE WELL installment on the topic.

Double cleansing is the very trendy thing to do right now when it comes to skincare. All the big magazines and beauty resources are raving about it—I’m sure you’ve seen it. And if they allllll say it’s good, it probably is. But IMO, the key to quality skincare is simply listening to your skin and giving it what it needs in that moment. Sometimes that’s two cleansers, sometimes that’s one. Whatever works best for you!

But how did this even become a thing? Well, with the increasing popularity of Korean beauty, double cleansing, one of K-beauty’s most well-known rituals, rose in the charts to become one of the most important steps in one’s skincare routine.

The pros over at Allure spoke to a dermatologist that suggested thinking of it as first lifting the dirt, grime and pollutants and then washing them away. The same dermatologist also recommended first using an oil-based cleanser or micellar water—something that will really “lift” the impurities. For your second cleanser, it’s suggested to use something that’s super gentle and lathers nicely.

It’s also important to note that the main benefit of double cleansing is that products can really be more effective when applied to an already clean face, so having that first cleanser to remove and the second to penetrate is never a bad thing.

What’s been your experience with double cleansing? Is it something you practice regularly? I’m into trying!

  1. This is really a game changer for dealing with breakouts, especially in the summer. I use a whole foods brand oil cleanser first and remove it with a damp cloth and then wash my face with my regular cleanser. It’s made a tremendous difference – if you wear makeup and/or sunscreen on a daily basis you’re probably not getting it all off with one wash.

  2. I’ve never heard of double cleansing. It sounds like a good idea to get all the grime off then lather. I wonder if it would be drying though? I’m sure not if you use the right face wash. Thanks for the idea, I might have to try it and see how it goes!

  3. I’ve been double-cleansing for the last couple of years now and it’s made a visible difference to the areas of my face where pores tend to get congested. I use a cleansing oil or a micellar water as the first step; either one really helps to get rid of top-level dirt, makeup, and waterproof sunscreen formulas! The first cleanse also helps the cleanser I use during the second cleanse work and lather better.

  4. I have started religiously double cleansing about a year ago and I can vouch for it. I wear quite a lot of makeup and using the double cleanse method feels like my skin is better cleaned and it almost feels like all of my skincare has started working better.

  5. I’ve been using the double cleanse method for 4 months and my problem skin has never looked or felt better. I was very skeptical of washing my face with oil! My husband also started the double cleanse after seeing my results.

  6. I’ve been double cleansing since before it was a thing and had a name. Just made sense to me. I used different products before – a physical exfoliant followed by a foaming cleanser then instead of the cleaning balm/oil followed by the cleanser I use now. A warm facecloth always after the 1st to remove residue. On sunscreen only days, I use a makeup wipe for the first cleanse.
