Maybe you’ve heard the word adaptogens, but it left you thinking adapto-what? Because me too at first! It’s kind of a mouthful, but also a very intriguing wellness topic – perfect for this week’s edition of our LIVE WELL series.
Put simply, adaptogens are adaptogenic substances used in herbal medicine. They’re known to help regulate and stabilize physiological functions primarily as it relates to stress and anxiety. You’ve heard of herbal tea, right? Well, if you’ve drank it before then you’re already on your way to adding adaptogens to your wellness routine. They’re basically one in the same.
Some of the most popular adaptogens are Maca, Ashwagandha and Cordyceps. Their benefits range from helping with sleep to aiding sexual dysfunction to liver and kidney support. Sun Potion and Moon Juice are two popular and well-known brands if your interest has been piqued and you want to give adaptogens a try. They come in powder form and usually just require you to blend them in with your morning tea.
Depending on what your needs are and what kind of adaptogen you’re interested in trying, I recommend speaking to your doctor, an herbalist or a functional medicine specialist before adding herbs to your routine. Like anything, adaptogens can affect other medications and existing conditions, so always best to check in with the pros.
Anyone familiar with adaptogens? Would love to hear about any experiences taking them.
