The 3 Things I Drink Within the First Hour of Waking Up

I’m a big believer in how you treat the first hour of your day. Of course, your attitude/motivation can shift throughout the day, but personally, I find that when I do certain things in that first hour, my entire day feels better. I’ve spent the last few months being thoughtful about what things impact me most, and one thing I’ve noticed surrounds what I’m drinking (or eating). Here are 3 things I drink within that first prime hour:

Warm lemon water within 15 minutes of waking

Since starting this habit, I now crave it. I love the refreshing taste, but I also appreciate how it gets things moving (if ya know what I mean) and feels energizing. I use a big mug, 1/4 of a lemon, and basically get in a bunch of hydration first thing.

Green smoothie 20 minutes later

Lemon water is known to detoxify, and many studies show that you need to let it sit (or digest) in your system on an empty stomach for it to work its magic. I’m not sure if it’s true, but I do feel better if I wait awhile before eating – or drinking, in this case. I usually feel sluggish after a big breakfast, and I’m not someone who wakes up starving, so my go-to breakfast is a light green smoothie. I tend to make this the night before and blend it up/drink it right before I make my…

Coffeeeeee

I go through phases of coffee vs. tea, but right now, it’s coffee – with a twist. I only drink one cup a day and I drink it with a little milk of choice, collagen powder and cinnamon. Cinnamon is full of antioxidants and it’s also very anti-inflammatory, plus it’s just tasty. The collagen is especially helpful for new mamas like myself – and for strong hair, nails, and bones! We all lose collagen as we age, so it’s a good, flavorless boost for your bod.

The days that I skip something on this list, I notice it. Maybe it’s placebo, but I think there’s something to it!

  1. I don’t drink anything with citrus or with sugar in at least half an hour after I’ve brushed my teeth which is first thing in the morning as it erodes the enamel on your teeth. I’m a tea fiend so a gentle cup of green/jasmine/oolong/genmaicha/earl grey in the morning is ideal
