How to Sage Your Home (and Why)

Are you familiar with the practice of saging (or smudging)? I’ve kind of jumped on the bandwagon this past year with a few of the more “woo-woo” wellness practices and saging my home is one of them.

If you’re wondering what saging your home means exactly and why people do it, to put it simply, it’s ritualistically burning a bundle of dried sage. According to Native American tradition, it is supposed to clear a person or place of negative energy or influence. Yesss please!

So, if you’re looking for a way to clear the energy in your home or simply press the reset button, grab a sage bundle because this is how to smudge your home.

First, you’ll need a sage smudge stick. You can usually find them at natural grocery stores, wellness sections at places like Anthro, or you can order them online. Next, you’ll set an intention, say an affirmation or a prayer—whatever feels right to you. Through this you can request anything that wasn’t born of light and positivity please leave your home.

Now it’s time to light your sage bundle. Make sure it is fully lit and smoking well because according to Native American ritual practices, it’s the smoke that rids your home of the negative energy. It’s said that the energy latches onto the smoke and Mother Earth absorbs and filters it.

You’ll want to give your house a thorough walkthrough at this point, getting into all closets, nooks and crannies. For example, if someone angry or unpleasant came into your home, definitely be sure to really smoke that area. Or if someone was sick and spent a lot of time in a specific area of the house, that’s a place you’d want to smoke thoroughly as well.

You can sage your house as much as you’d like—after a fight with your partner, after a big party or gathering, after someone is sick—basically any time you’d like to press the reset button like I mentioned above.

So what do you think? Will you be saging your home? If you have before, share plz!
